In general, the cause of cramps is unknown (idiopathic). While experts argue that cramps occur when muscles are already in a contract position is stimulated to contraction. This happens when we sleep with half-bent knee position, and your feet pointing slightly downwards. In this position the calf muscle slightly bent and prone to cramps. That's why stretching movements before bed can prevent it.
In some cases, the cramps may occur because of problems or other conditions, for example:
* Some medications can give side effects such as cramping. These drug classes include: diuretics, nifedipine, cimetidine, salbutamol, statins, terbutaline, lithium, clofibrate, penicillamine, phenothiazines, and nicotinic acid.
* Dehydration
* The imbalance of salts in the blood substance (eg, calcium or potassium levels are too low)
